Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award - Practice Expedition

Dear families,

We are writing to you with further information regarding the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award which your child is currently taking part in. A practice expedition will take place on Friday 17th May.

The purpose of this practice expedition is to ensure that students are familiar with the skills they will need on the final expedition, for example, map reading in an unfamiliar environment. Students will also need to be able to walk for at least 5 hours carrying a full backpack in preparation for the full expedition. On this date students will come to school as normal and depart at approximately 9am. They will return to school at approximately 3pm.

Please ensure that your child has the following;

  • Comfortable and appropriate clothing to wear, for example, tracksuit bottoms or leggings
  • Shoes which they can walk in for 5 hours - sturdy trainers or walking boots are recommended
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Spare layers of clothing in case temperatures cool during the day, for example, additional jumpers or fleeces
  • A hat
  • Suncream
  • Packed lunch and additional snacks
  • Drinks for the day

School will provide:

  • Backpacks
  • Additional items to carry to train for carrying full backpacks on the expedition
  • Maps and compasses
  • A packed lunch if your child is in receipt of free school meals

Please note there will not be an opportunity for students to stop to purchase food/drinks so your child should bring plenty to keep them going during the practice walk. Students will be supervised at all times for the duration of the practice expedition.

Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us at school.

    Yours faithfully,

Mrs Allsopp-Medley and Mr Haste
