Young Green Briton Challenge - Design Sprint Workshop

Year 8 and 9 took part in the Young Green Briton Challenge where they created a design solution to a local sustainability issue.

The Young Green Briton Challenge, delivered as a partnership between Volunteers for Future, Social Innovation for All, the Ministry of Eco Education, and the Green Britain Foundation, supports students aged 11-14 to learn and apply design, innovation, business, and other transferable skills, empowering them to explore local climate and sustainability issues and design entrepreneurial solutions (Eco-Ventures) or campaigns (Eco-Campaigns) to address the problems they identify.

During Community Ambition and geography lessons, students have investigated a range of issues from transport to fashion to food waste. This challenge was the perfect opportunity for them to use their knowledge to help tackle these sustainability issues.

This week our students took part in the Design Sprint Workshop delivered by the YGBC team.  The students worked in groups to develop and prototype their ideas into tangible products, campaigns or enterprises. We have received £150 of seed investment funding for the chosen top teams. YGBC's expert team of volunteers provided mentorship to all of the students.

Each team pitched their ideas and shortlisted teams will soon pitch at an Eco Dragons Den. Ideas included the creation of water and wind power hubs, a clothes recycling scheme and reduction of public travel costs. The winning team will then go through to the national finals in London at the start of July.  One team project is then selected from each school in June to attend the National Award Finals where 4 teams will receive an additional £1000 to increase the impact of their eco-venture.

"A huge thanks for hosting the YGBC team this morning - Farah, Dave and
myself had a fabulous session. Your pupils were engaged, enthusiastic and
really well behaved and it was so interesting to learn more about the model
you are developing at Belle Vue."

Thank you Ms Allsopp-Medley  for organising this fantastic project and giving our students this opportunity.
