MFL

At Co-op Academy Belle Vue, our Spanish curriculum provides students with a rigorous and diverse education that focuses on communication, grammar manipulation and knowledge of and respect for other cultures. Through our carefully planned and sequenced lessons, students gain opportunities to develop phonics, vocabulary and grammar. It allows progression from novice learner to expert scholar, regardless of starting points. Our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and adaptability ensures that all students see themselves within the Spanish curriculum and have the opportunity to explore their own languages and cultures, as well as comparing and contrasting them with the Spanish language and with Spanish speaking people around the globe. By providing a knowledge rich education with character, we empower our students to become informed and compassionate global citizens who can contribute positively to society. Our KS3 Curriculum covers the National Curriculum for MFL in full and prepares students for the rigours of Spanish at KS4.

The Spanish curriculum at Co-op Academy Belle Vue aims to:

  • Teach and embed key Spanish phonics, vocabulary and grammar through a series of well planned lessons and assessments. This includes interleaving opportunities across the curriculum of high-frequency language, that students can use to communicate with others and to express themselves.

  • Promote the social and cultural capital that learning a language brings, including learning about and from people in Spanish-speaking countries.

  • Develop students’ literacy through the medium of extended reading and writing both into Spanish and translating from Spanish into English.

  • Develop students’ oracy skills through a variety of speaking tasks, including giving presentations individually, conversations in pairs and small groups and taking part in larger discussions.

  • Develop students’ listening skills. Students will have opportunities to listen and respond to shorter and longer texts and conversations, as well as to authentic Spanish language material.

  • Be ambitious for all students to push for accuracy, detail and a variety of language and structure, including using a range of tenses in their work, when appropriate.
